Communication is not just about what you say, it's how you say it. In leadership, our attitude is everything.

Have you ever had somebody change the whole vibe of a meeting or gathering, just by walking into the room? Maybe they were carrying anger, or sadness, or resentment. Maybe they were bursting with happiness, optimisim, excitement. Either way, I am willing to bet you felt it, even if they didn't communicate it.

As a leader, others are constantly looking to you to set the tone. This means you need to have a good attitude, even if you don't feel like it. It may not always be easy. In fact, more often than not, it will be really, really difficult. But a great leader leads for others, not for themselves, and that means doing what's right, not what's easy.

🌟 The Art of Character Encouragement is an important chapter in my book that is all about shifting the spotlight from what someone does, to who they are.
In my coaching journey, I’ve learned the power of recognizing and praising individuals for their character—their unique essence, moral qualities, and personality traits.
Character, the very core of a person, is what makes them extraordinary. While skills can be acquired and cultivated by anyone, character is intrinsic and deeply personal. Encouraging someone’s character makes them feel wonderful for simply being themselves.

True encouragement prioritizes the who over the do. It’s tempting to praise performance, achievements, or metrics, and I’ve struggled with this myself. Whether leading at work, on the field, or at home, we often fall into the trap of recognizing only the external outcomes.

Surface-level encouragement is easy and reflexive, leading to cultures focused solely on results. While results matter, a person’s character matters even more. In building teams, shaping culture, and achieving performance, understanding and praising individuals for who they are activates their true potential.

To create better teams and foster a positive culture in our homes and workplaces, we must invest time in understanding the unique characteristics that define people. What drives them? What gives them meaning? Engaging in the Art of Character Encouragement is the key to unlocking their potential.
