I often get asked to help people find the right words, but I rarely get asked about posture, eye contact, and energy. We must remember that so much of communication is non-verbal!

In communication, verbal and nonverbal elements interact in a complicated dance. Communication is multifaceted, it looks different from different angles. The words, we use, actions we display, and tone of voice we speak in all have communicative power. Just as our words have meaning and impact, so too can our gestures and body language. Just ask poker players, police interrogators, and facial and human behavior-recognition technologists whether nonverbal communication matters 😉

It can be scary to be vulnerable.

Today, our society often depicts vulnerability as weakness. Vulnerability leaves us open to attack. It leaves us open to shame, to rejection.

But here’s the truth - in order for connection to happen, we have to be vulnerable. Vulnerable enough to take a chance on something that has no guarantees of success. Vulnerable enough to share your feelings first. Vulnerable enough to invest in your team, in relationships with people who may, or may not, work out. In order to be vulnerable, we have to allow ourselves to be seen, for exactly who we are, rather than for who we wish we were. And we have to risk that people might not like what they find.

This level of vulnerability requires courage. But if you are vulnerable with others, you’ll show them that it’s okay to be imperfect, and eventually, they’ll feel safe enough to be vulnerable with you.

Helping others feel free to be themselves, however imperfect they may be, is one of the greatest qualities of a true leader. And guess what? It starts when you choose to lead in your vulnerability.
